“My biggest fear was crossing the street. I was fearful of going outside and traveling around my neighborhood,” says Shafonda, legally blind and learning to live independently with the help of an orientation and mobility specialist at the Lighthouse. She practiced crossing streets and navigating through her neighborhood every day, using a long cane and other techniques that the mobility specialist taught her.
“It has really empowered me,” says Shafonda. “I don’t know where I would be or who I would turn to without the Lighthouse.”
