Driving and Decision Making Among People 55 and Over

You are invited to participate in a study funded by the National Institute of Aging and conducted by Lighthouse International about driving and decision making among people 55 and over. Most prior research on driving and aging has focused on the medical factors that influence driving behavior but little is known about the impact of changes in driving on social factors and well-being. In this study, we will examine the impact of changes in driving behavior on well-being and the social influences on decisions about driving.

We are interested in talking to people with vision problems who are current drivers. Findings from the study will help us develop and improve vision rehabilitation services.

Eligibility:

  • age 55 and over

  • currently driving

  • some problems with eyesight

  • reside within 100 miles of New York City

If interested, an interview would be done in your home or at the Lighthouse that takes about 90 minutes and you would receive $25 in appreciation of your time. You would be asked about your experiences with driving, vision problems, everyday activities, and your attitudes about life in general. Everything you say would remain confidential and would not affect your services at the Lighthouse. The study also involves follow-up interviews to see how people might change over time.
