Child Development Center at Lighthouse International to be Renamed The Ethel and Samuel J. LeFrak School and Children's Services Program
June 15, 2011: The Child Development Center of Lighthouse International will be officially renamed the Ethel and Samuel J. LeFrak School and Children’s Services Programs in recognition of a very significant donation by Mrs. LeFrak to the nonprofit organization. Lighthouse International is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting to vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment.
According to Mark G. Ackermann, President and CEO of Lighthouse International, "Mrs. LeFrak’s extraordinary support will not only enable us to upgrade our facilities and technology but also explore opportunities to serve a greater number of children in the metropolitan area. Our children will benefit from her generosity for generations to come."
Adds Mrs. LeFrak, "I am glad to give this gift to the Lighthouse. My husband, Sam LeFrak, would have been very pleased because he believed so strongly in education. When I visited the school I was so touched by the children. The Lighthouse teachers and staff help the children overcome many obstacles to gain the strength and confidence they need for their future development."
The funds will be used for new classrooms as well as updated technologies such as computers and educational games. In addition, the donation will provide for new furniture, toys and books for the new classrooms and new equipment for the rooftop gym.
The Ethel and Samuel J. LeFrak School has openings for 120 children. It is nationally and internationally recognized as a model program where preschoolers who are visually impaired learn side-by-side with their sighted peers. The curriculum is especially designed to use all the senses to provide an enriching environment for all the children. The school also provides home and school-based early intervention services for infants and toddlers who have developmental delays. On June 23, 2011, 55 children will graduate from the Ethel and Samuel J. LeFrak School.
