Winning Career Advice
- If
you're having trouble getting started on your resume, write the first
draft as a letter to a friend or relative listing your accomplishments.
- If you're applying for different types of jobs, customize your resume for each type.
- Before e-mailing your resume to a prospective employer, e-mail
it to either yourself or a friend, to ensure that the format remains
the same.
- When you're on a job interview, remember to use listening skills as well as verbal skills to support your job qualifications.
- Always write a "thank you" note after every interview.
- Think about the "plusses" you may have, that may be related to
your vision impairment, for example, that you are highly organized or
that you pay close attention to detail.
- Rehearse answers to the kinds of questions that interviewers ask and that normally trip you up in an interview.
- Remember that the employer is hiring you for -- your "ability"
and "knowledge." Be sure to research the job and be able to discuss why -- and how -- you can do it well.
- Know about your employer. Information about most companies and
organizations can be obtained through the Internet. Prior to your
interview, visit the company's Web site.
- Be prepared. Bring an electronic note taker or other means of taking notes to the interview.
- Work on how to make your prospective employer more comfortable, less ill at ease. Your career counselor can help.
