Types of Eye Care Professionals
Low vision specialist
An ophthalmologist or optometrist trained in the functional evaluation of people with low vision and in the prescription of low vision devices. Low vision is a subspecialty; not all eye care professionals are trained in this area.
Ophthalmologist (MD)
Doctor of medicine, educated, clinically trained and state licensed to examine the eye and vision system, diagnose vision problems and eye diseases, and provide surgical and medical treatment.
Optician
Trained to grind, fit and dispense corrective lenses and low vision devices prescribed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
Optometrist (OD)
Doctor of optometry, educated, clinically trained and state licensed to examine the eye and vision system, diagnose vision problems and eye diseases, prescribe glasses or contact lenses, and provide referral. Optometrists are licensed to use and prescribe diagnostic and therapeutic drugs in all 50 states.
