PERSONAL

Artie Elefant is the founder of the Tandem Bike Program for Achilles International, which provides athletes with disabilities with a community of support. Artie tragically lost most of his vision due to retinitis pigmentosa and was also diagnosed with chronic lymphoncytic leukemia. Determined to live a full and healthy life, Artie persevered and found solace in athletics. He has competed in a variety of events, including marathons, triathlons, and tandem rides. In 2008, Artie partnered with Goldman Sachs to coordinate a mini-tandem bike event for teenagers in Lighthouse International’s Youth Programs.

WHY I’M RIDING

“I used to be a biker before I lost my vision and had to stop riding a bike. By riding in this event, maybe I can encourage people to ride again after losing their vision. Or, if you never rode a bike due to your loss of vision, you might start to ride.”
