When Lauren Calvo was just six weeks old, she was diagnosed with aniridia, a congenital deficiency categorized by the lack of an iris in the eye. With her vision significantly diminished, Lauren underwent a staggering 14 surgical procedures. When the Calvos found Lighthouse International's Early Intervention program, everything changed for the better, and Lauren started making progress. The love and dedication of the Lighthouse staff inspired the Calvo family to support the Lighthouse — from volunteering their time, to helping raise funds through Double Up 4 Vision.
Why I'm Riding:
The help Lauren received inspired the Calvo family to take part in Double Up 4 Vision 2010, raising over $20,000 in support of the Lighthouse! This year, Tom Calvo will be completing a “symbolic” ride with his daughter, Lauren, to kick off the 24-Hour Tandem Bike Relay. Lauren’s grandmother, Rita Calvo, a Lighthouse volunteer says, "[Double Up 4 Vision] was one of the highlights of my life, in terms of participating in something as a family. It brought us together."
