Viewing Technologies for Vitroretinal Surgery

New wide-angle, panoramic viewing systems are providing improved views of the fundus during vitreoretinal surgery. Innovations include illumination systems that allow flexibility in lighting all or parts of the retina and a stereoscopic "re-inverter" that allows surgeons to operate using direct images rather than the inverted images caused by indirect ophthalmoscopy. Such advances enable surgeons to see the entire fundus more clearly and help ensure that pulling on retinal membranes on one part of the retina does not cause breaks in another part. Surgeon comfort is enhanced and operating times may be reduced, possibly improving surgical outcomes.
