- Individuals volunteering over five hours a day receive a lunch voucher and round-trip MTA New York City Transit public transportation reimbursement.
- Lighthouse volunteers are recognized with service pins for their years of service in increments of five years.
- Each year, Lighthouse International celebrates the contributions of its volunteers during National Volunteer Week (usually the third week in April). During National Volunteer Week, departments take time to recognize the contributions of many dedicated volunteers who have supported them throughout the year.
- Lighthouse International also honors its volunteers in an annual Volunteer Award Recognition Ceremony. All volunteers receive an invitation to the ceremony. Read about how you can qualify for The President’s Volunteer Service Award
What Opportunities Exist for Volunteers?

Once you have found a volunteer opportunity that fits your need, fill out our online application. After we receive your application, we’ll contact you to schedule an interview.
Volunteer opportunities are located in our New York City headquarters with some limited need for assistance in Palm Beach, FL.
Individuals who are visiting New York City from outside the United States with appropriate documentation are also welcome to volunteer. We do not facilitate help with Visas or documentation.
What is the Time Commitment for Volunteering?
On average, volunteers serve four hours a week. However, time commitments can vary depending on which area or program you are involved with. Visit the Volunteer Opportunities page for more information.
What is the Minimum Age to Become a Volunteer?
The majority of our volunteers are over 18-years-old. We also welcome teenagers, 16 and up, and place them on projects on a case by case basis. Please call 212-821-9688 for more information.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities that allow for interaction with Lighthouse clients. Not only will you gain experience working in a professional organization, you'll see how your work helps our clients each and every day. "You really start to see, especially once you work at the Lighthouse, how blessed we are," said Rita Calvo, who volunteers at The Lighthouse Store and helps clients with low vision devices and products.
"I get satisfaction from helping people," said Christina Coleburn. "It brings purpose to your life." Christina collects clothing for our annual POSH Fashion Sale and also helps organize holiday events.
"I get joy from helping to raise money that goes to people who need services," said Gloria Lewis, 85, a POSH Fashion Sale volunteer. "We are a team at the Lighthouse. We all work together for the same reason, to help others."
"I like volunteering because it has given me the opportunity to meet many dedicated people who go out of their way to assist the Lighthouse clients," said Maria Spony, 85, a reading services volunteer.
