On June 17, 2010, 11 volunteers, including three corporate partners, were honored at the 2010 Lighthouse International Volunteer Recognition Awards. The Volunteer Award Recognition System was created in 2007 to celebrate the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who support Lighthouse International’s mission of fighting vision loss through prevention, treatment and empowerment. Linda Schmidt, a WNYW-FOX 5 News Reporter, was the Master of Ceremonies at the event.
The award recipients included a volunteer who gives up her weekends and lunch hours to mentor visually impaired music students; a former client who now gives back to the organization by securing donations; and a family for their exemplary philanthropy. "More than 1,500 volunteers support our programs and services,” says Mark G. Ackermann, President and CEO of Lighthouse International. “Their help is crucial to our ability to serve people who are visually impaired and enable them to live independent and productive lives.”
