Gifts Under Will

Leaving a bequest to Lighthouse International is a meaningful giving option for many individuals. It allows our supporters to make a significant contribution without giving up valuable assets needed during their lifetime.

A charitable bequest made in your will or trust can take many forms:

  • You can leave a specific sum of money.
  • You can leave a specific asset, such as real estate, securities or other property.
  • You can designate a percentage of your residuary estate, or what remains of your estate, after you have provided for other beneficiaries.

This document (PDF) provides an example of how you can include a bequest for Lighthouse International in your will.

Gifts From A Trust

A charitable remainder trust is a flexible giving arrangement through which you or your beneficiaries receive an income for life or a term of years. You will receive an immediate and substantial income tax deduction and -- if you fund the trust with long-term appreciated property -- you avoid capital gains taxes. The annual payment that you receive from your charitable remainder trust depends on the type of trust you establish (either a charitable remainder annuity trust or charitable remainder unitrust). Upon the trust’s termination, the remainder or the portion you choose will go to Lighthouse International to be utilized for its general purposes or a specific program you designate.

Gifts of Life Insurance or IRA

Lighthouse International may be named as the beneficiary of an asset that passes outside the terms of a will or a trust such as a life insurance policy*, IRA or 401(k). In order to make your wishes known, please contact your insurance, IRA, or retirement account custodian. The legal name and address your representative will need to include is: Lighthouse International, located at 111 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022.

*If you donate an existing or new life insurance policy to Lighthouse International, you will be able to claim an immediate income tax deduction. Your future premium payments will also be deductible. If you prefer to retain ownership of the policy, you can simply designate Lighthouse International as a beneficiary or the sole beneficiary of your policy.

The federal government has extended the law allowing people age 70 1/2 and over to arrange direct charitable gifts from their traditional and Roth IRAs — up to a maximum of $100,000 — through the end of 2011. This law does not apply to gifts made from other retirement plans, such as pensions, 401(k) plans, etc.

To make an IRA gift to Lighthouse International, contact the custodian or trustee of your account. Please also call our office, so we can ensure the proper transfer and provide you with a receipt for your contribution. Please note: If you withdraw funds and then contribute them to the Lighthouse, the amount will be included in your gross income and, therefore, subject to tax. That’s why it’s vital that your IRA custodian or trustee make the transfer of funds directly to the Lighthouse and not to you. While this gift doesn’t provide you with a charitable deduction, it will save you more in taxes because it reduces the amount of your total income subject to tax.

A Charitable Gift Annuity with the Lighthouse can provide increased peace of mind and secure income. This may be a very worthwhile time to consider establishing a new charitable gift annuity with the Lighthouse. In addition to a high, guaranteed rate of return, you will enjoy tax breaks (an immediate income tax deduction, tax-free income and capital gains tax relief). You will also have the personal satisfaction of knowing that the gift portion of your annuity will help people who are partially sighted or blind overcome the challenges of vision loss.
