Meet Our Doctors

Eleanor E. Faye, M.D., FACS Dr. Eleanor E. Faye has been affiliated with Lighthouse International since 1956. She has served as the Medical Director since January of 2006, and previously served as the Director of the Lighthouse Low Vision Service from 1965 through 1992. In addition, she has served as Ophthalmologic Advisor to the Lighthouse Center for Education from 1994 to present. Dr. Faye is internationally recognized as a leader in low vision. She is the author of numerous publications, and her book, Clinical Low Vision (Boston: Little Brown & Co., 1994) went into its second edition, and has become a classic text on low vision. Dr. Faye's numerous accolades and awards include two Merit Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Optometric Association, and an Honorary Doctor of Science from the State University of New York College of Optometry.

Bruce P. Rosenthal, OD, FAAO Dr. Bruce P. Rosenthal is Chief of Low Vision Programs at Lighthouse International and has been affiliated with the organization since 1974. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Mt. Sinai Hospital and Distinguished Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York College of Optometry. Dr. Rosenthal serves as the Chair of the AMD Alliance International Scientific Advisory Board and is the Chair-elect of the American Optometric Section on Low Vision. Dr. Rosenthal continues to lecture extensively throughout the world and has been the author of seven books, including Living Well with Macular Degeneration.

William O'Connell, OD, FAAO Dr. William O'Connell is Lighthouse International's Director of Low Vision Services for the Hudson Valley Region, a Diplomate in Low Vision of the American Academy of Optometry, and is Chair of the Diplomate Program. Dr. O'Connell has previously served as Director of the Low Vision Service at Montefiore Medical Center, and consultant to the Jewish Guild for the Blind and the Lavelle School for the Blind. He is a faculty member of the SUNY College of Optometry and the New York Medical College, Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. O'Connell has conducted research, written numerous articles, and contributed to texts on low vision care. He has previously served as a member of the New York State Board of Optometry and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.

Lisa Chan-O'Connell, OD, FAAO Dr. Chan-O'Connell has been a full-time clinician at the Manhattan Low Vision Service of Lighthouse International since 2000. She completed her optometry training at SUNY College of Optometry in 1999, followed by a one year residency in hospital-based optometry and low vision at the VA Connecticut Health Care System-West Haven Campus and the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Center. She holds the title of Adjunct Clinical Professor at SUNY State College of Optometry. Dr. Chan-O'Connell authored a scientific paper on inflammatory processes relating to glaucoma medications, which was published in Review of Optometry in 2000. She also lectured on Bioptic Telescopes and Driving at Vision Expo, 2004.

Andrea Zimmerman, OD, FAAO Dr. Zimmerman completed her optometry training at SUNY College of Optometry, and her Low Vision internship at Lighthouse International in 1989. She joined Lighthouse International as a Low Vision Consultant in 1994, after working at the Helen Keller Institute for 5 years. Dr. Zimmerman has co-authored scientific papers on low vision topics, and has lectured nationally on Performing Low Vision Examinations and Treating the Low Vision Patient.
