The Internet for Beginners

What is the Internet?

The Internet is a large worldwide network of computers that can communicate and exchange files with each other.

History of the Internet

The Internet grew out of a 1960s experiment by the U.S. Department of Defense to create a computer network that would be immune to a nuclear attack. The experimental project, called ARPANET, was launched in 1969 and linked four U.S. universities. Scientists and researchers in any one of these four locations could use the resources available in each of the other institutions. New connections were soon added to this network along with additional features growing it into the Internet that we know today.

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is the collection of all the resources (HTML documents, images, and other files) available over the Internet via a web browser.

What is a Web browser?

A web browser is a computer program (software) that accesses web pages and displays them on your computer screen.
