A Talking Bar Code Reader
The i.d. Mate II is a portable electronic tool that provides information to a blind or partially sighted individual about virtually any product that has a bar code or UPC and cannot be identified by any of the other senses.
Since bar codes are placed on almost every product available in stores today, the i.d. Mate II has a database of over one-half million North American UPCs and descriptions that provide a user with extended package details beyond the simple description, such as: instructions, ingredients, nutritional information, package size and warnings among other miscellaneous product details.
The i.d. Mate II uses an omni-directional scanner that can read the bar code in any direction. The user does not need to locate the UPC visually, but simply rotate the scanner around the product to get a reliable read. The scanner comes with a handy carrying case for protection.
The i.d. Mate II can be used in the home or the workplace to identify cans, jars, boxes, bottles, clothing, playing cards, prescription drugs, compact discs, albums, cassette tapes, pictures, important documents and other.
In addition to providing information about products, the i.d. Mate II can be used as a digital memo recorder. The user can record, play or erase voice memos, which are saved on the same memory card that contains the database of UPCs. The removable flash memory card is about the size of a matchbook. The largest card available can hold up to 2 gigabytes.
Although the unit integrates well with a PC, no PC or PC knowledge is required to operate it. It has a high-output battery pack with a life of over 200 bar code scans, and is also operational when plugged into a standard AC wall outlet. It has a volume control and an earplug jack for privacy. It measures 11"x4"x4" and weighs less than 2 lbs.
Each i.d. Mate II package includes: the i.d. Mate II unit; the bar code scanner; a carrying case with strap; 4 high-capacity Ni-Cad batteries; AC/DC power adapter; 100 pre-printed bar code labels that can be used for items that don't have an existing bar code; a 64 MB compact flash memory card.
