About the Lighthouse

Founded in 1905, Lighthouse International is the leading non-profit organization worldwide dedicated to preserving vision and to helping people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss through a variety of programs and services.

Children's Services begin with our early intervention program, which helps infants born with vision loss reach important developmental milestones. Our integrated preschool welcomes children who are sighted and visually impaired for an enriched educational experience for all.

Low Vision Center provides specialized eye exams by low vision doctors to evaluate a person-s remaining vision and overall visual function to help maximize existing vision -- often with the use of prescribed optical devices.

Youth Services enable teens with vision loss to build confidence and independent living skills to achieve success in school and, ultimately, in the working world.

Mental Health and Social Services provide emotional support to help people - and their families - cope with vision loss at any stage of life.

Career Services enable people with vision loss to prepare for, obtain or retain a job. We also match employers with qualified candidates.

Orientation & Mobility Training helps people travel safely, take public transportation on their own, and prevent falls and injuries.

Adaptive Computer Training in how to use computers, the Internet and other workplace state-of-the-art technologies.

Rehabilitation Services introduces safe, new ways to manage household tasks such as cooking, personal grooming, and managing medications and finances.

The Diabetes Center helps people with diabetes-related vision loss through education and disease management.

The Geriatric Center of Excellence provides comprehensive care for older adults with impaired vision who also have other medical conditions, helping them to remain safe in their own homes -- or wherever they live in the community.

The Center for Education trains tomorrow's professionals and paraprofessionals in low vision care and vision rehabilitation through online and in-person continuing education classes.

The Arlene R. Gordon Research Institute advances our knowledge of how people who are visually impaired function in everyday life.
