Update: New Treatments for Wet AMD
LucentisTM now joins Macugen® as another FDA-approved anti-VEGF drug for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Anti-VEGF drugs target the proteins that trigger abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage.
Avastin®, another anti-VEGF FDA-approved drug for colorectal cancer, is also being used off-label in the treatment of AMD. Off-label means that a drug is being used for a condition for which it did not receive original FDA-approval.
